English grammar essentially has eight parts of speech — nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Let’s look at all these parts of speech along with kids questions one by one with examples so that you can start teaching kids and help them develop an understanding of its uses in grammar:
1. What is a Noun?
A noun is a word that is used to identify the name of any person, animal, thing or place. It is considered the simplest one among all parts of speech. Given below is an example of noun question:
Anita is a brilliant painter.
Here, the noun is ‘Anita’ which is the name of a particular person.
2. What is a Pronoun?
A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun in a sentence. Pronouns are mostly used to avoid the repetition of a noun in a particular sentence. Given below is an example of pronoun question:
David plays cricket well. And David has won several competitions in school.
The above sentence can be written as : “David plays cricket well. He has won several competitions in school.”
Here, ‘He’ is a pronoun which we are using in place of the noun ‘David’.
3. What is an Adjective?
An adjective is any word that modifies a noun or a pronoun. It can be used to specify the number, quality or size of a noun or pronoun. Given below is an example of adjective question:
The rooftops of houses are usually covered in sparkling snow during winter.
Here, the adjective is ‘sparkling’ as it modifies the meaning of the word snow.
4. What is a Verb?
A verb describes the action or occurrence of a particular act. It is the most important part of speech because without a verb a sentence cannot be completed. Given below is an example of verb question:
Adele is dancing on the stage.
Here, ‘dancing’ is the verb that denotes an action.
5. What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, adjective or preposition in a sentence. Given below is an example of adverb question:
Tina sang a song melodiously.
Here, the adverb is melodiously, that is modifying the verb in the sentence.
6. What is a Preposition?
A preposition is a word that is used to connect nouns or pronouns to other words in a particular sentence. Given below is an example of preposition question:
The kitten is sitting under the table.
Here in the sentence, the preposition is ‘under’. Some examples that are included in a preposition question are across, around, on, behind, above, beneath, inside, outside, etc.
7. What is a Conjunction?
A conjunction is that part of speech that joins words, clauses or phrases together in a sentence. Given below is an example of conjunction question:
Daisy wanted to go to her friend’s place but it was raining heavily.
Here in the sentence, ‘but’ is the conjunction.
8. What is an Interjection?
An interjection is a word that is used to express strong emotions. These words are generally followed by an exclamation mark. Given below is an example of interjection question:
Hurray! We won the match.
Here, ‘Hurray!’ is an interjection in the sentence.
